MILLENNIUM CITIZENSHIP CURRICULUM

As a subject at Millennium Schools, Citizenship has the power to motivate and educate young people into becoming thoughtful, active citizens who engage with, and participate in, public life. Citizenship involves people acting together to address issues of common concern to maintain the democratic culture and to improve society. To achieve this goal, Millennium Citizenship education teaches knowledge understanding about politics, the law and the economy and skills to participate effectively and responsibly in public and democratic life. Through citizenship education, students:

  • Explore questions about democracy, justice, inequality, how we are governed and organized.
  • Learn to work together to create solutions that try to address challenges facing neighborhoods and wider communities.
  • Develop political literacy to make a positive contribution to society as informed and responsible citizens.

Young people are citizens of today, not citizens in waiting. Millennium Education for citizenship is about developing in learners the ability to take up their place in society as responsible, successful, effective and confident citizens both now and in the future. It provides learners with the opportunity to develop an understanding of fairness and justice, equips them with skills of critical evaluation and encourages the expression of attitudes and beliefs to respond to the challenges we face as global citizens in a constructive and positive manner.

Millennium Schools consult parents, caretakers and families within their communities on values to be fostered and approaches to be adopted (e.g. through school values forums). RMS apply Citizenship Education priorities to the overall curriculum provision, structures and policies, procedures and rules, funding priorities, decision-making arrangements, disciplinary procedures, community relations and welfare pastoral care approaches. In collaboration with the other schools across the border, to share experiences and good practices with the aim of eradicating  existing differences on the basis of religion, color, caste and creed.

MILLENNIUM ENTREPRENEURSHIP CURRICULUM

The entrepreneurship curriculum offered by Roots Millennium Schools is playing a significant role in shaping the young generation into successful entrepreneurs. A dynamic economy, which is innovative and able to create the jobs that are needed, will require a greater number of young people who are willing and able to become entrepreneurs. RMS believes in young people who will launch and successfully develop their own ventures, or who will become innovators in existing organizations. This curriculum develops enterprising attitudes and skills, as well as understanding of the world of work in all its diversity, including entrepreneurial activity and self-employment, imperative to successful entrepreneurial ventures.

Entrepreneurship education at Millennium Schools is essential not only to shape the mindsets of our students but also to provide the skills and knowledge that are central to developing an entrepreneurial culture. According to the curriculum framework, the entrepreneurship key competence refers to an individual’s ability to turn ideas into action.

It includes creativity, innovation and risk taking, as well as the ability to plan and manage projects in order to achieve objectives. Developing mindsets, generic attributes and skills that are the foundations of entrepreneurship can be complemented by imparting more specific knowledge about business according to the level and type of education.

The contribution that entrepreneurship in education makes to the personal growth of children can enhance their life choices, to help them become confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society. The most fundamental reason for thinking about entrepreneurship at the grass roots is to find sustainable solutions to overcoming the existing injustices of poverty, which is evidenced by malnutrition, low life expectancy, and indifferent educational attainment, poor access to water, inadequate healthcare and exclusion from the benefits of economic and technological progress. These are supported in many academic and policy documents, and are highlighted by the UN Millennium Development Goals.

MILLENNIUM SCHOOL FITNESS PROGRAMME

The Millennium School Fitness Programme aims to ensure that schools are providing students with healthy environment, nutritious food, and opportunities for physical activity and lessons that support lifelong healthy habits. Lessons learned in class can shape how students approach health and wellness. Fitness Programme helps teachers make sure those lessons are healthy ones. It is a professional development program to help teachers integrate nutrition and fitness into everyday subjects, while meeting school standards.

Millennium Healthy Schools Campaign equips teachers with a simple, creative approach to education and classroom management that makes wellness a priority. It engages students in creating visual representations such as graphs of the number and types of healthy foods eaten during lunch.

This programme encourages the students to stay active throughout the day and review any subject in an active way. The combined effect is an inspiring yet practical programme designed to support teachers and engage students.

The benefits of Millennium Physical Education affect both academic learning and physical activity patterns of students. The healthy, physically active student is more likely to be academically motivated, alert, and successful. In the preschool and primary years, active play may be positively related to motor abilities and cognitive development. As children grow older and enter adolescence, physical activity may enhance the development of a positive self-concept as well as the ability to pursue intellectual, social and emotional challenges.

MILLENNIUM ART, MUSIC AND READING CURRICULUM

Millennium Reading Curriculum is a safety net designed to promote literacy learning and reduce the number of students struggling with reading and writing. At Millennium Schools, we ensure that children master the reading fundamentals, such as associating sounds with written words and fluency. We also help develop and use all word identification concepts and skills, as well as comprehension strategies such as recognizing confusion, adjusting one’s strategies, and identifying and summarizing main ideas and important details. Through different activities we make sure to develop the following skills in your child; important literacy and pre-reading skills, social and emotional competencies, brain development, oral language skills, phonemic awareness and letter knowledge.

Art, in all its forms, is used as a means of exploring and coming to terms with the world. It acts as a vehicle for expressing ideas and solving problems, in addition to encouraging aesthetic development and poses intellectual demands on children. Children are encouraged to explore a variety of materials and craft skills, and the value placed on children’s artwork may be seen in the care with which it is displayed around the school.

In addition to the focus on arts, students’ are encouraged from the start to develop skills for not only listening, but performing music as well. Children are introduced to a variety of songs, musical instruments and other sounds. Older students’ are further stimulated to develop these skills and use music in ways related to other curriculum areas.

According to the Millennium Music Curriculum, the effect of music education on language development can be seen in the brain. Millennium Schools Music, and Visual Arts curriculum frameworks and implementation resources are intended to support, promote and inspire the growth of all students as artistic learners as they journey towards becoming creative, artistically literate; adults and citizens who will truly enrich their own lives and the lives of future communities. In Millennium Schools, the curriculum is presented through extended “main lessons” which focus on one subject in depth. This approach differs from other instructional approaches that allot equal time to every subject. Teachers are free to include whatever activities they feel will work best for the children in the class.
