The Millennium Early Years - TMEY

Children at The Millennium Early Years are exposed to practical life exercises, giving them the opportunity to master the environment and encourage self-care. Sensorial materials are designed and put in use in order to support the balanced development of all senses.

Through each subject, we incorporate a different capability in our learners. The Mathematics material introduces our students to one-to-one correspondence, numeration, sequencing of numbers and basic arithmetic operations. In language, children are prepared to read using a multi-sensory approach that involves phonics and linguistics. They learn about Geography through large, wooden puzzle maps while we teach Science and nature so that we can stimulate the child’s ability to discover, experiment and explore the outdoor environment while creative arts and crafts allow for self-expression and fine motor development.Similarly music enhances listening skills, ear training, rhythmic movement and singing.

The Early Years practitioners implement a clear, principled approach and use effective assessments from the child’s first day till the end of the Early Years. We work on creating trust between teachers and the classroom environment, all the while encouraging a sense of community, long-term friendships and essentially freeing children from many social concerns for them to feel free to nurture themselves.

In order to follow a broad and balanced curriculum, many students take courses from each of the IGCSE groups (see subjects offered list), particularly if they’re aiming to go on to further professional education. The decision making about the subjects is critical, try to choose the subjects if:

  • You have been good at – and enjoyed – a subject in the past.
  • You need a subject to enter a particular career or course.
  • You have not studied – subject before but have looked into it and think it will suit your strength

Cambridge IGCSE is designed to be taught as a three year course at our school. The criterion for admission to IGCSE level is such that any student coming from any school, who has passed 7th or 8th grade, will be admitted to IG-I i.e. grade 8th. The child will go through an admission test of subjects English and mathematics and will undergo a brief interview if he/she passes the test.  Admission Form Pack (AFP – 001), prospectus together with subject combination form are available at all admission offices and selection of the students is on merit. The decision of the management and school administration is final and cannot be challenged. The details of the grades and age group are mentioned below:

Department of International Qualifications at Head Office ensures quality and standard of internal assessments in all campuses of TME nationwide by providing centralized examination system. Internal assessments take place throughout the course of three years and gives options to the learners including written, oral, coursework and practical assessments. The student’s academic progress is assessed through, sessional, terminals, mock exams, oral and listening tests, practical exercises, home assignments, projects and written examinations. The progress is then recorded by the administration and result folder and report cards  are sent home after sessional and term exams. Parent Teacher Meeting is held twice in each term and four times in an academic year.

At TME, there are two terms in an academic year. First term is from Aug-Dec and 2nd term is Jan to June. There is one sessional (monthly assessment) in first term and one sessional in the second term. First terminal exams and Mock exam for the exam class held in December and final term promotion exams in May and result comes in June. After analyzing the results of 1st mock exam and two-year performance Principal and subject teachers decide to get the child registered for core or extended curriculum.

At TME we believe that home learning needs to be part of a wider partnership between parents and school. Homework contributes toward building responsibility, self-discipline and lifelong learning habits and provides students with the opportunity to apply information they have learned, complete unfinished class assignments, and develop independence. Home learning refers to work or activities which students are asked to do outside lesson time either on their own or with parents / guardians. A well-organised, regular programme of home-learning helps to develop an understanding of lifelong learning as well as reinforcing learning in the classroom. The following guidelines set out the school’s broad expectations about the amount of time students might reasonably be expected to spend on home learning and provide a useful framework for parents. However, the precise amount of time spent on home learning is much less important than the quality of the tasks set and the way in which they are planned to support learning. All students are given monthly schedules in which different days will be assigned to different subjects, to spread HW over the week. This helps us to avoid over burdening our students as well as keeps our students actively involved in their studies.

Guidelines

  • Write down assignments in the “TME RA Dairies”
  • Be sure all assignments are clear; don’t be afraid to ask questions if necessary
  • Set aside a regular time for studying

The Cambridge AICE Diploma draws on the extensive range of Cambridge International AS & A Level subjects. To achieve the Diploma, all learners will need to study and pass the Cambridge International AS Level Global Perspectives & Research (9239). The Cambridge AICE Diploma offers breadth across the curriculum and depth in selected subjects. Learners have to achieve a minimum of seven credits (including Cambridge International AS Level Global Perspectives & Research) from subject groups 1, 2 and 3 (and optionally Group 4) to be awarded the Diploma. Learners must achieve at least one credit from each of Groups 1, 2 and 3. The remaining credits can come from any of the groups. A maximum of two credits can count from Group 4. The Millennium College Years - TMCY

A Cambridge International AS Level is awarded one credit, and a Cambridge International A Level is awarded two credits.

AS level (Advance Subsidiary Levels) and A Levels are the most widely accepted qualifications for university admission. A level Certificate is equivalent to higher secondary School Certificate. AS Level generally takes one year to complete and A Levels are studied across two years.

Generally students progress to AS and A Levels in the academics year following their IGCSE, MYP and Matric result. Both qualifications focus on traditional study skills. A Levels is graded A* – E. A* was introduced to differentiate highest performing students from other A – Grade candidates. Examination are taken in May/ June and Oct/ Nov every year.

The advantage of taking AS Examination is that pupils can judge how they are progressing and whether they want to continue the subject to A Levels. Most students study three to four AS Levels. The CIE board is the main body to offer International AS and A Levels. Schools can offer wide range of subjects and the freedom to offer them in almost any combination.

Learners can specialize or study a range of subjects, Ensuring breadth. Giving learners the power to choose helps motivate them throughout their studies. This flexibility enables building blocks to build an individualized curriculum that develops your learners’ knowledge, understanding and skills in.

  • in-depth subject content
  • independent thinking
  • applying knowledge and understanding to new as well as familiar situations
  • handling and evaluating different types of information source
  • thinking logically and presenting ordered and coherent arguments
  • making judgements, recommendations and decisions
  • presenting reasoned explanations, understanding implications and communicating them clearly and logically working and communicating in English.

The syllabuses are international in outlook, but retain a local relevance. They have been created specifically for an international student body with content to suit a wide variety of schools and avoid cultural bias.

The content, the structure and the administrative support make Cambridge International AS & A Level the answer to the needs of schools worldwide. According to CIE” flexibility means schools can build an individualised curriculum and learner can choose to specialize in a particular subject area or study a range of subjects”.

The CIE International AS Level is graded A – E and the CIE international A Level is graded A* – E. There is no A* for Cambridge international AS Level.

In AS Level, the subject content is half a Cambridge International A Levels.

Many schools use Cambridge International AS Level to give learners valuable feedback on their performance, identifying strengths and weaknesses before they complete their full Cambridge International A Levels.

At Millennium Colleges, A levels composite is discouraged. However, there can be a exception as a special case  to facilitate some students by the approval of the  principal.

The Students can choose from a range of assessment options to gain Cambridge International AS & A Level qualifications:

Take the Cambridge International AS Level only. The syllabus content is half a Cambridge International A Level.

Take a ‘staged’ assessment route – take the Cambridge International AS Level in one examination series and complete the final Cambridge International A Level at a subsequent series.

Take all papers of the Cambridge International A Level course in the same examination session, usually at the end of the course.

For all MC’S and TMUC’S offering A levels Qualification nationwide, the first option for assessment will be implemented for the following benefits that the students would have as experienced and found to be successful at RMS.

Each Subject that learner takes receives a separate grade in AS and A level. After receiving the AS level grades ( A- E) the students have a clear idea of the standard of achievement and this sets the future course more clear in terms of effort that needs to be made do better or maintain the grade.

Cambridge International AS & A Level assessments give students a variety of ways to show their knowledge and skills. Our school has opted Cambridge International AS Level assessments to give learners feedback on their performance before they complete their full Cambridge International A Level. This helps the students and understands their strengths and weaknesses, and improve their results and also relieves them from half of the content from A level.

AS level is recognized worldwide. Completing AS level also helps in University Application. The candidates tend to produce better results if they appear in AS rather than composite Examination. Students appear in AS are required to prepare half of the content in one year and later half in one following year, predicted grades on the basis of AS result are more authentic and realistic.

Cambridge International IGCSE/A/AS Level syllabuses have been created specially for an international student body. They provide an interesting and relevant course of study that Access, challenge, flexibility Cambridge International IGCSE/A/AS Level helps students to develop the in-depth subject knowledge and understanding that universities and employers look for.

Schools can encourage breadth through a combination of International IGCSE, A and AS Levels or allow students the right to specialise in their chosen area. For example, many students choose to concentrate on Sciences and Mathematics at IGCSE/A/AS Level. Results in a qualification equivalent in standard to the UK version.

The content of International IGCSE/A/AS Levels is created to suit the wide variety of our schools and to avoid any cultural bias. The structure and administration of International IGCSE/A/AS Levels meet the needs of our schools around the world.

SDG 2030 Inclusion Programme

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 objectives – negotiated and agreed to by all 193 world governments in 2015 – to end extreme poverty, achieve decent work for all, promote justice, peace and prosperity, and protect the natural environment from human-caused harms. Schools and teachers are in a unique position to educate the future generation of community leaders, consumers, voters and citizens on the world’s biggest challenges and to inspire them to take action today. More than half of the population of our planet is currently under the age of 30 – the biggest generation of young people the world has ever seen. This puts educators in a truly unique position of influence and impact for the future of the planet. Schools and teachers have a tremendous opportunity to empower billions of young people to become leaders and pioneer a movement for a better and more sustainable future.

As one of the leading educational institute of our country, incorporating SDGs into our school and college culture requires impact and authentic engagement of students. Sustainable Development Goals form an important part of The Millennium Education School life and Curriculum.

We aim to achieve this through five main strategies:

School Curriculum
Our School curriculum is based on Sustainable Development Goals. Our curriculum focuses on the seventeen SDGs throughout the primary years and Lower secondary years enabling learners to develop skills and attitude towards promoting justice, reducing in equalities , protecting the Earth, handling climate crisis, working for the poor and needy.  It aims to ensure our learners develop the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to flourish in practical life, learning and teaching environments, and to appreciate their place in the community and at the same time advocate for action and the attainment of the SDGs in a holistic, integrated manner in our classrooms.

School Projects
We conduct global projects directly aligned to Sustainable Development Goals. Through our projects we give learners the apparatus necessary to handle complex local and global issues like gender inequality, local poverty, racism, and many others, while empowering students to start making the difference they want to see in their communities. Schools are also places where learners, teachers and parents gather to collaborate and partner with the wider local, national and global community and as such, have a unique educational responsibility and potential to create change. We collaborate with many local communities and schools while working on the achievement of SDGs and our students make visits to the schools as part of the projects carried on. We partner with many schools internationally through connecting classrooms and Microsoft Innovation Classrooms where we collaborate with our partner schools for completing projects based on Sustainable Development Goals.

Morning Assemblies
Millennium learners are being taught that United Nations observances contribute to the achievement of the purposes of the UN Charter and promote awareness of and action on important political, social, cultural, humanitarian or human rights issues which are directly aligned with Sustainable Development Goals.  They provide useful means for the promotion of international and national action and stimulate interest in United Nations activities and programmes. Our school morning assemblies elucidates our school vision bringing out the best in a learner mentally, intellectually, academically, physically and culturally by developing the attitudes, skills, knowledge and values in the students, thus required to meet the Global Challenges as Millennials in the 21st century through school culture and learning environment. Our assemblies focus on creating awareness and understanding the SDGs through activities and presentations and active participation of students.

School and College Clubs and Societies
There are a wide range of clubs and societies in operation at The Millennium Education. These Clubs and Societies have been set up keeping in mind the Sustainable Development Goals.  The clubs and societies focusing on the SDGs reside within the broader thematic areas of SDGs such an environment, Community Service, Arts, Languages, Governance, Leadership and Entrepreneurship societies.

The Millennium Education Citizenship Curriculum
The Millennium Education Citizenship Curriculum aims to provide a coherent structure to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in our schools. It aims to sensitize our Millennials about Sustainable Development Goals and motivates the young Millennials to come ahead to perform positively for their community and thus take the lead to steer it in the right direction.

Intel Information Communication Technology

Digital Literacy Creates Opportunities for Learners in Pakistan
Information & Communication Technology (ICT) has tremendous potential to contribute to knowledge dissemination, effective learning, and the development of more efficient education services. Today’s teachers must be prepared to provide technology-supported learning opportunities to their students in order to deliver the skills required by the modern knowledge economy. Being prepared to use technology, and understanding how technology supports student learning, must be an integral part of every teachers professional repertoire. These trends, which are rapidly influencing countries around the world, are also quickly taking root in Pakistan and have the potential to significantly boost the skills of Pakistani students and teachers.

In an effort to support education, advocacy, and technology access Intel joined hands with one of the largest school system in Pakistan, the TME Millennium Education to drive systemic education transformation and prepare teachers and students for the needs of the future.

Intel has been working to bring computers, Internet access, and digital learning to students all across Pakistan since 2001, giving youth in urban and rural regions new opportunities to thrive in the 21st century information society. At the same time, Pakistan must develop a better educated and skilled workforce that can support the country’s continued economic growth, develop effective policies critical to establish the conditions for success and to accelerate transformation, create new curriculum standards and assessment that will help transform the education system to meet the demands of a globally competitive environment, and a train quality teaching workforce that is imperative to enable a quality education system.

Challenges

Approach:

Benefits

Program Implementation
Technology is capable of transforming the classroom environment and has distinct advantages that enhance the teaching and learning process. Pakistan’s education policy affirms the country’s vision to deliver education opportunities for all its citizens. Many programs have been launched by the federal and provincial governments to achieve these goals. Yet, the country has continued to lag behind others that have successfully developed “Knowledge Economies”.

One reason for this slow progress is that the approach towards teaching in Pakistan has remained very traditional; focused on rote memorization as a means of transferring book knowledge only. However, at the TME Millennium Schools, the teachers have been trained through the Intel Teach Program. The TME Millennium Schools is a group of education institutions which focuses on building the professional capacity of teachers so they can give their students a modern education which is capable of preparing them for 21st century challenges.

Project Details
The TME Millennium Education renewed its vision of ICT in Education and recognized how it could contribute to the objectives they have for the schools development. The ICT curriculum needed to be updated to keep pace with the advances in technology and the pupils increased knowledge and abilities.

The Millennium Institute of Professional Development entered into a MoU with Intel Pakistan to collaborate on curriculum development and teacher training in March 2009. A project office was established at the TME Head Office under the authority of Department of Quality, Curriculum and Assessments (DQCA) and consisted of four ICT subject specialists as well as curriculum research officers from TME Schools and Intel.

Through the project office, the school developed a framework, based on Intel Teach Skills for Success course, to brainstorm ideas for content, curriculum, and activity development.

Regular and continuous professional development has enabled the schools’ shift to a student focused learning approach. Changes in the assessment strategies placed more emphasis on pupil self-assessment and meeting targets set through shared rubrics. As a result, students have a better understanding of what is expected and what the next steps will be. Learning has become more exciting, relevant, and fun. Students utilize technology to access a wide range of information and to enable them to unleash their creativity.

The students are becoming ‘Digital Natives’ and are more productive 21st century learners; they are self-evaluators, problem solvers, critical thinkers and collaborators which use technology as medium of learning.

The school now demonstrates the true ICT in Education paradigm; That learning to access and analyze ‘Information’ for the purposes of ‘Communication’ using ‘Technology’ equals the skills for success in the Knowledge Economy.

TME and Intel Teacher Training Initiatives
The management of TME Millennium Schools ensures that every student has access to a computer and all new teachers joining the school receive training on Intel Teach Program Courses to prepare them to participate in the updated teaching methodologies of the school.

Through the Intel Education Initiative, Intel Pakistan conducted a number of trainings at TME Schools including the Intel Teach Essentials, Thinking with Technology, Intel Teach Getting Started, and Intel Teach Skills for Success courses for teachers, as well as several Principals Hands-on workshops for the benefit of the administrators. These courses enabled the teachers to develop student centered learning and project-based approaches which integrated technology in the learning environment.

The partnership has delivered a robust education transformation process across all the grades in all the branches and campuses under the system, more than 15,000 students from Grade 1 to Grade 8 are using Intel and TME Intel Teach Skills for Success course content on an annual basis.

Conclusion
The implementation of Intel Teach Skills for Success Course in the TME Schools delivered significant benefits to the teachers by improving computer skills, and creating a more effective and interesting learning environment for the students. The implementation and practice of using Intel Teach Skills for Success helped teachers to implement technology-supported project-based learning in the new standards-based environment.

Transforming the TME education process required the support of the school and district level administrators and the local community. Now that the new program is in place, the TME Schools administrators and teachers are continuing to learn from the experience and share their results with their local community and the greater education community. The lessons learned from this experience are valuable in guiding other organizations who are seeking to modernize their education processes.
